Make your own Chick Fil A Sauce at home! This sauce is a cross between honey mustard and bbq sauce and is perfect for dipping fries or chicken.
All about this Chick Fil A Sauce…
- Of course you can buy a large squeeze bottle of the sauce, but did you know it’s just as easy to make it at home?
- It’s been said the secret of the sauce is that it is honey mustard mixed with coleslaw or ranch dressing. I have heard from employees though that it’s not ranch it’s the coleslaw dressing, which is very similar to this particular recipe. You can’t get closer unless you go to the restaurant yourself.
Ingredients:
Notes on some ingredients:
- Honey: this adds a hint of sweetness, the color of your honey will determine the coloring of your sauce.
- Dijon/Yellow Mustard: both are used in this recipe.
- Lemon: can be substituted with apple cider vinegar.
- BBQ Sauce: use your favorite, a great option is Sweet Baby Rays.
How to make (step-by-step):
- Step 1: combine the ingredients, add all ingredients to a bowl and stir or whisk together until well combined.
- Step 2: chill, let the sauce rest in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes before using.
Expert Tips:
- Don’t grab a flavored, extra sweet BBQ sauce. Go with an Original flavor/style. This allows you to control the sweetness with the honey in the recipe.
- Make a double batch so that you can keep some leftovers in the fridge.
- If you want a smokier flavor try adding a drop of some liquid smoke in the recipe.
FAQ’s:
If you have never been to the restaurant to try the original, the flavor is a cross between honey mustard and BBQ sauce.
This sauce is perfect for dipping fries or enjoying with chicken. You can also use it as a spread on sandwiches or burgers if you like.

Well at five o’clock Super Bowl Sunday and my son announced he forgot he was supposed to make his copycat Chic Filet nuggets. Well, by luck I just happened to buy a three lb bag of Sams club nuggets on Friday! Stuck them in the oven, whipped up this sauce and he was out the door at 5:30! Thank you for saving the day. Cocktail time for me!
What? Where’s the cheese?! I would have never imagined it was not cheese?!
This is fun! But, if you look at the actual ingredients of the sauce, you’ll see there is no honey in it. It is basically (the ingredients for) mayonnaise, followed by BBQ sauce, followed by mustard, with a few thickeners thrown in. 🙂 https://www.chick-fil-a.com/Sauces-Dressings
This sauce is incredibly close to the real chick-fill-a sauce, 20 out of 10.
Not quite chick-fil-a…. but good enough to make my chick-fil-a loving grand-daughter happy! A recipe I can see myself making over and over. Thank you for sharing.
Oh my goodness – made this tonight and if you’d had dinner with us, you’d have sworn I drove through Chick-Fil-A and brought dinner home! We had those new (to us anyway) Sam’s Club Southern chicken bites and Ore-Ida waffle fries with the copycat sauce. Thanks for the recipe!
Yum!! Sounds like a delicious dinner!
What kind/brand of barbecue sauce did you use?
I’ve made it with several kinds. I always just use what I have on hand. Either a Kraft BBQ sauce, or Sweet Baby Rays. But I always use an original flavor. Not a dressed up BBQ sauce.
How long does this keep in the refrigerator?
I’ve had it in the fridge for up to 3 days before we eat it all.. Just give it a stir before you use it.
Don’t forget to add the warm chocolate chip cookies to your order! I think those are some of the best of all restaurant cookies. I can’t wait to try this recipe. The sauce is to die for!!!
I need to try those cookies next time I go!! Thanks 🙂
don’t put that much bbq in it folks
yummy
Hello! Thank you so much for posting this! We live overseas and my husband and kids were really missing Chik Fil A sauce, so I searched for a copy cat and found yours! We really like your sauce, it has become our go to sauce for almost anything!! Thank you! Question- may I post the recipe on my blog as long as I link back or give credit to you?
Thanks,
Shellee
Hi Shellee! Thanks so much. I’m so glad you enjoy the recipe! Feel free to share on your own blog with a link back 🙂 Thanks so much for asking!
Tastes pretty close to the real thing. I made a double batch so we’d have extra to store in the fridge. I think we’ll be making this pretty often as the closest Chick fil a is 90 miles away.
Thanks Kelly! I’m so glad you enjoyed it!
This was good! Next time, I would double the mayo to make it more true to Chick-fil-a texture, and half the honey as well as lemon juice. Thanks for this recipe!
Thanks for the tips Emma! 🙂
How important is the lemon juice? My sister and I are allergic ?
Hi Kate! The lemon juice is just adding a bit of acidity. You can definitely leave it out and just add a splash of white vinegar for the same effect.
Am I the only one who tried this recipe and didn’t get the desired result? My sauce came out runny and tasted to sweet. Really love Chick-fil-A sauce! So really disappointed! Followed directions exactly.
So sorry it didn’t turn out! I’ve never had it end up runny. So it’s possible it was the type of BBQ sauce or something else that might have been different.
* DIDN”T FOLLOW THE RECIPE * Only used what I had on hand. Would’ve made bbq sauce but was pressed for time. Used mayo, yellow mustard, and raw honey. Didn’t measure because I’m an experienced cook and just eyed it. Came out nice and creamy and it was delicious! Put it on grilled chicken and bacon sandwiches! YUM! Thanks for the recipe!
I wanted to thank youu for this good read!!I absolutely loved every little bit of it.
I have got yyou book-marked to check out new stuff you post…
Chick-fil-a sauce is a mix of 3 other sauces: honey mustard, BBQ, and ranch. Hope that helps y’all.
Hi Mary, Chick fil A sauce is actually a mixture of mustard, bbq sauce and their cole slaw dressing. Which is basically what I have here. Except instead of using a store bought cole slaw dressing I made my own homemade version.
Great recipe, 10/10! One thing I like to add is about a teaspoon of smoked paprika, really makes the sauce for me.
Thanks so much! And that sounds delicious!
