  • Carne Asada: Our recipe for Carne Asada comes together with a simple marinade and grills up quick on the grill, you can also cook it on the stovetop if preferred.
  • French Fries: Save some time and use store-bought frozen fries. Or take the extra step and make your own. Here’s a recipe to follow if you decide on making homemade French fries.
  • Cheese: I love grating my own cheese to get a nice melty finish.
  • Pico de Gallo: a nice fresh salsa with chunks of tomato. Or you could use any salsa of choice.
  • Guacamole: Homemade is always best!
  • Sour Cream: Gives a cooling, tanginess to the dish.
  • Pickled Jalapeños & Fresh Cilantro: Add color, and flavoring to the finished fries.

Let’s Make Some Carne Asada Fries

Baking sheet with crispy French fries topped with melty cheese.
  1. First, line a large baking tray with parchment paper or a silicone baking sheet and spread the fries out into a single layer. Bake them according to the directions on the package, tossing the fries halfway through baking for optimal crispiness on all sides.
  2. Next, sprinkle the cheese on top of the fries and continue to bake an additional 2-3 minutes until the cheese is melted.

  1. Finally, layer the flavors by topping the cheesy fries with diced carne asada, scoops of guacamole and sour cream, fresh pico de Gallo, sliced jalapeños and diced cilantro. Serve them up or enjoy straight off the pan!

Recipe Tips

  • Marinate for Flavor: A citrusy, smoky marinade of orange juice, lime juice, cilantro, garlic, cumin, and paprika gives the meat its signature flavor. Let the steak marinate for 4-24 hours—any longer and the acids could break it down too much.
  • Grill for Authenticity: Grilling gives carne asada its charred, smoky taste. If you don’t have a grill, a cast iron skillet on the stovetop can replicate it.
  • Balance Flavors: Fresh toppings like pico de gallo, cilantro, and jalapeños cut through the richness, while crema or sour cream helps mellow the heat and richness.

Variations You Might Like

  • Short-Cut Options: Save some time and use store-bought guacamole and pico de gallo. If you have a carniceria (Mexican meat market) near you, then grab some already marinated or prepared carne asada to grill up at home.
  • Lighter Swaps: Switch out the sour cream for greek yogurt if desired. Or swap out the fries for a sweet potato version.
  • French Fries: Use your favorite kind! You can use a crinkle cut, steak fries, or shoe string if you prefer.
  • Extra Spice: Add more heat by using a pepper jack, other spiced cheese, or drizzle with a homemade queso.
