What is Tomato Twiddle?
Tomato Twiddle is a recipe that was created by my Mother-In-Law, Sue. She was born and raised in Britain and throws the BEST tea parties. This is one of her most requested tea party recipes. Tomato is blended with sharp cheddar cheese and onion to create a flavorful, spread.
How to make:
- Remove Tomato Skins: slice an “X” on the bottom of the tomatoes. Carefully place them in a pot of boiling water for 2-3 minutes, until the skin starts to lift up where cut. Remove from the pot and allow to cool for a minute. Peel the skins off carefully with fingers.
- Remove seeds: cut the tomatoes in quarters and remove the seeds to prevent too much liquid in the mixture.
- Blend: add tomato, shredded cheese, and onion to a food processor and pulse until smooth. Spread: spread onto bread and serve on sandwiches.
Pro Tips:
- Consistency: The cheese controls the consistency. Start with a little less than the amount called for an:
- Flavor: Same with the onion, it controls the taste, start with a lower amount if needed and add as desired for taste.
Storage:
- Storage: Store the tomato twiddle in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. This can be made ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator and served cold spread onto sandwiches.
- Freezing: it is not recommended to freeze this recipe.

Tomato Twiddle- The Ultimate Tomato Sandwich
Ingredients
- 2 tomatoes off the vine if possible
- ½ lb sharp cheddar cheese shredded
- ¼ cup white onion chopped
Instructions
- Prepare the tomatoes by cutting an "X" on the bottom (not deep, just enough to pierce the skin of the tomato). Place in a pot of boiling water. Allow the tomato to boil for about 2-3 minutes. Once the skin is starting to curl up off the tomato, where you cut it, remove from the water. Allow to cool for about a minute. Then peel the skin off the tomatoes. Cut the tomatoes in half and remove all of the seeds and discard.
- Add the tomato, cheese, and onion into a food processor (start light on the onion and add as desired for flavor) Pulse until fully combined. Mixture will be spreadable. If too runny add more cheese to thicken.
- Spread onto bread and serve on a sandwich. Store in refrigerator if not serving immediately.

hello I love tea sandwhices and I wanted to try the above recipe however I don’t have a food procosser can I use a blender? thank you
Yes you can! Just be sure not to blend it too smooth. you want some texture left to the mixture.
Really yummy. Though I just speared the tomatoes on a skewer and roasted them on a direct gas flame till the skin charred and peeled off.
That’s a great idea! I bet it gave the tomatoes a slight fire roasted taste.
I put on an afternoon tea for my daughter’s dance academy on a VERY tight budget. I’m always on the hunt for new sandwich ideas that will be delicious and budget-friendly. This is perfect!
Looks like a wonderful alternative to plain old pimento cheese. Will be making these but may also try a few with some jalapeรฑo as we like food a little spicy too.
Thats a great idea!
I’m giving my mother a surprise 85th birthday. I’ve been looking for tea sandwich recipes. Can’t wait to do a practice run on these. I was going to make my classic pimento sandwishes but these no doubt be a hit. Thanks for sharing. Plus I have say I enjoy being the one that does something unusual. I’m just so excited about this party. My moma deserves the very best & I’ll definitely let you know how they go. I’ve got 3 other sisters & we are always competeing on things like this. It’s all in good fun when we 4 girls do our monthly parties. Honestly we do hats occasionally & our tea is a something like sweet Raspberry or peachhat. We’re southern ladies and we’ve done a hot tea in the cold months. Which are rare in Oklahoma. Again thanks.
Hi Lisa! Your mother’s party sounds like it should be so much fun! Hope you enjoy these sandwiches. They are definitely one of our favorites!
These were delicious! I added some sun-dried tomatoes for a more tomato-y flavor and a touch of mayonnaise for ease of spreading.
So glad you enjoyed! Thanks for sharing Jill!
