These buttermilk waffles are everything a waffle should be—crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside, and bursting with that classic tangy flavor. Perfect for lazy weekend mornings or anytime you want a breakfast that feels like a warm hug.
Golden, Crispy, Perfect Waffles
Sunday mornings as a kid always meant waffles. I’d sit on a stool in the kitchen, whisk in hand, helping my mom mix up the batter. The waffle iron would hiss and steam, filling the house with that warm, buttery smell that made everyone wander into the kitchen.
When they were done, we’d stack them high, drizzle them with syrup, and enjoy them together, still a little sleepy but happy. Even now, making buttermilk waffles brings me right back to those slow, sweet mornings.
Why You Will Love This Recipe
- Crispy Outside, Fluffy Inside – The perfect texture combo!
- Classic Buttermilk Flavor – Tangy, rich, and irresistible.
- Easy to Make – Simple ingredients and no fuss.
- Customizable – Top with syrup, fruit, whipped cream, or all three.
- Perfect Every Time – Reliable results with every batch.
Ingredients Needed
- Buttermilk: Adds tangy flavor and helps create a tender texture. Substitute with milk + 1 tablespoon of vinegar or lemon juice per cup if needed.
- All-Purpose Flour: Provides the base for the waffle structure. For a lighter texture, you can use half all-purpose and half cake flour. Or swap with a gluten free 1 to 1 if needed.
- Baking Powder and Baking Soda: Leavening agents that make the waffles rise and stay fluffy. Make sure they’re fresh for best results.
- Eggs: Bind the ingredients and add richness. Use large eggs for consistent results; a flaxseed egg can work for an egg-free version, or egg replacer.
- Melted Butter: Adds richness and flavor. Can be swapped with neutral oil or melted coconut oil.
- Sugar: Adds a touch of sweetness to balance the tang of the buttermilk. Feel free to reduce or substitute with a natural sweetener like honey or maple syrup.
- Salt: Enhances all the flavors; don’t skip it!
- Vanilla: Adds warmth and a hint of sweetness. You can experiment with almond extract for a different flavor twist.
How to Make Simple Buttermilk Waffles
Find the complete recipe card below with measurements and full instructions.
- In a large bowl combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Stir with a fork to combine.
- In a smaller bowl, add the granulated sugar, buttermilk, butter, and eggs. Whisk this mixture together.
- Add the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients one third at a time, mixing in between. Be sure not to over-mix. Leave the lumps and air bubbles to create a light and fluffy texture to the cooked waffles.
- Spray your waffle iron with a cooking spray. Then pour the batter onto the waffle iron. Cook according to the directions of your waffle-maker or until waffles are cooked through and crispy on both sides.
Serving
Whether you keep it classic with butter and syrup or get creative with sweet or savory toppings, here are some delicious ways to serve them up!
- Classic: Drizzle with maple syrup and top with a pat of butter.
- Fruit-Topped: Add fresh berries, banana slices, or sautéed apples for a fruity twist.
- Whipped Cream: A dollop of whipped cream takes them to the next level.
- Savory Style: Pair with fried chicken or top with bacon and a drizzle of hot honey.
Storage Information
Storage: Let the waffles cool completely before storing them. Stack them with parchment paper in between to prevent sticking and place them in an airtight container or freezer bag. Store in the refrigerator for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
Reheating: To keep waffles crispy, reheat them in a toaster, toaster oven, or air fryer. For larger batches, place them on a baking sheet in a 350°F (175°C) oven for 5–7 minutes until warmed through. Avoid microwaving, as it can make them soggy.

These were excellent! Crispy on the outside, soft on the inside and not cakey. My husband said they were better than any restaurant waffles he has had (and he is a truck driver so he has had waffles in every major center on the continent).
I found one mistake though; the 2 eggs are missing from the ingredient list. Just thought you would want to know!
Happy New Year!
Thank you so much! I did get the recipe card updated with the egg info. Thank you again 🙂
