This Mexican Mule is a spin on a classic Moscow mule using tequila with a combination of lime, mint, and ginger beer. This refreshing cocktail is cold, crisp, and elegant when served in copper mugs and garnished with fresh mint and lime wedges.

Why We Love This Recipe

I much prefer using tequila in cocktails over vodka. Which is probably why margaritas are one of my favorite cocktails to enjoy. However, when it comes to refreshing cocktails mules and mojitos top my list!

The combination of mint and lime is a classic (just like in our Mint Margarita). Although, thanks to the bite of ginger in these Mexican Mules they have a slight edge to be my all time favorite.

Mexican Mule Ingredients & Substitutions

Ingredients for a Mexican mule.
  • Tequila: Use a silver or blanco tequila. You can substitute with reposado, this will give a more complex flavoring.
  • Ginger Beer: There is no actual alcohol in ginger beer, but it adds the flavor. If you substitute with ginger ale you will be missing the strong ginger flavoring.
  • Lime Juice: Use freshly squeezed lime juice to avoid any additives or other flavorings.

Which Tequila Should I Use?

Use a Blanco or silver tequila when making this cocktail Reposados can also be a mildly flavored option since they are briefly aged (under a year). Avoid anejo tequila since it has been aged over a year and has a strong flavor which can be too much competition in a mixed drink. My favorite tequila to use is 3 Amigos Organic Blanco Tequila.

How to Make a Mexican Mule

First fill a copper mug with ice. Next, pour in the tequila, lime juice and top off with ginger beer. Stir to combine.

Serving

Finally, garnish with lime wedges or slices and fresh mint leaves. Serve this drink on the rocks (over ice). Mules are typically served in copper mugs. If you don’t have a copper mug you can make and serve this cocktail in a regular cocktail glass.
