Ingredients in a Watermelon Margarita

Ingredients needed to make a watermelon margarita laid on the counter.
  • Watermelon: the best part about this drink is the fresh watermelon! Cold, juicy, and lightly sweet, the watermelon is blended giving the perfect base flavoring to this drink. For fun you can freeze your watermelon beforehand for a frosty drink. If needed you can use store-bought watermelon juice.
  • Lime: the addition of fresh lime juice gives a tart, tangy flavoring that is classic of margaritas.
  • Tequila: the best tequilas for margaritas include blancos and reposados.
  • Orange Liqueur: the flavoring balances the sharp flavor of the tequila, popular options include Cointreau and Triple Sec.
  • Agave: this natural sweetener is a favorite in Mexican cocktail recipes, depending on your watermelon you may not need it! Give it a taste before adding and add the sweetener as desired.

Margaritas with Fresh Watermelon

  1. Prep your Watermelon: chop up your watermelon, it’s easiest to get a seedless variety to save time from picking out all of the black seeds. Small white seeds are perfectly fine to leave in. If needed here is some information on how to cut a watermelon.
  2. Blend: add your watermelon, tequila, triple sec and lime juice to a blender. Blend until smooth and no large chunks of watermelon remain. It will look foamy on the top.
  3. Sweeten: depending on your watermelon you may want your drink to be a bit sweeter, give the drink a taste and add some agave as desired.
  4. Salt your Rim: rub a lime wedge along the edge of your glass and dip into some coarse salt or sugar. Then pour in your drink! Cheers!

Variations

  • Make it spicy: add some jalapeno slices or drizzle a little jalapeno simple syrup into the drinks instead of agave. Or rim the glass with some chili lime seasoning for just a hint of spice.
  • Frozen: prep the day before and freeze your watermelon to make these a cold, frosty margarita. Simply slice it up, lay it out on a parchment paper lined baking tray and freeze for at least 2 hours before removing from the tray to store in a bag.
  • Pitcher: want to serve these for a party or get-together? Make a pitcher! You can easily multiply the recipe by how many people you wanting to serve.
