These Resurrection Rolls are a fun and easy recipe to make with children that will give a hands on lesson while sharing the story of Easter through the scripture reading of Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection.

Thanks to using simple ingredients and steps, this is a recipe that is perfect for little hands to help out with in the kitchen! Grab your Bible and share the story with them as you work alongside one another. At the end you will have a delicious treat to share together.

Ingredients and Substitutions

Ingredients needed to make resurrection rolls.
  • Marshmallows: The pure, white marshmallows represent Jesus Christ and his sinless nature. Use the large size marshmallows for this recipe. I have found that the vegan brands don’t vanish as completely as the regular brands.
  • Crescent Roll Dough: This represents the linen that Jesus was wrapped in. Use a store-bought dough or make your own using a homemade crescent dough recipe.
  • Butter: Represents the myrrh & aloes used to anoint Jesus’ body for burial (John 19:39).
  • Cinnamon & Sugar: The cinnamon sugar represents the spices used to anoint Jesus’ body for burial. (NOTE: While according to scripture the women returned home to prepare the spices and then rested on the Sabbath to return on the third day to apply them (Luke 23:56), we will be applying the “spices” in our recipe).

  1. Dip the dough ball into the melted butter, then into the cinnamon sugar, turning to coat the entire thing. Place in the cupcake liner, with the seam side facing down, then continue until all the dough has been used.
  2. Bake for 14-16 minutes until golden and puffy. Allow to cool briefly before serving. When you serve them be sure to point out that the marshmallow is now empty! He is risen!

The Resurrection Story

As you prepare these resurrection rolls with children please share the story of Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection through scripture with them along the way.

Matthew 28:1-10, Luke 24:1-12, John 20:1-10, and Mark 16:1-8 all share accounts of the resurrection on the third day.

Storage & Recipe Tips

  • Store: Keep the resurrection rolls in a sealed container at room temperature for 2-3 days.
  • Make Ahead: Prep these rolls and store them covered in the refrigerator to make the next day. Remove the baking dish with the rolls to sit at room temperature for 30 minutes prior to baking.
  • Be sure that when pressing the dough around the marshmallow that there are no gaps or holes, the dough should be solidly pressed around the marshmallow.
