Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon granulated garlic
  • 1 teaspoon granulated onion
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • ¼ teaspoon cayenne
  • ½ teaspoon mexican oregano

Instructions

  • Combine all of the spices together and stir to combine.
  • Store in a sealed jar until ready to use.

Notes

  • Chili Powder: we test all our recipes using Gebhardt's Chili Powder, a mild chili powder. McCormick's is another excellent option.
  • Cayenne: this is a ground cayenne chile pepper; it is on the hot side, so start with a small amount; you can add more to taste if you desire.
  • Paprika: use smoked paprika for a smoky flavoring if you are not grilling your meats and want a natural smokiness. Otherwise, you can use regular paprika.
  • Granulated Onion: this is a ground dried onion; it's coarser than onion powder, which helps it blend into the spice mix evenly. If you don't have this on your shelf, you can use onion powder, dried onion flakes, or even grate fresh onion if you are preparing the mix to use immediately. We don't recommend grating fresh onion into the seasoning blend for storage.
  • Granulated Garlic: like the onion, this is a coarser grind that helps the seasoning mix evenly into the blend. Substitutions include garlic powder, dried garlic flakes, or fresh minced garlic if used immediately. Again, don't add fresh garlic if storing the seasoning blend for later use.
  • Mexican Oregano: adds a beautiful citrusy herbaceous flavoring. You can sub with regular oregano or ground coriander; read our post about Mexican Oregano for more information.
  • Salt: use fine ground salt.
Marinade: Make this spice blend into a fajita marinade: combine 1 tablespoon of this seasoning blend with 1/4 cup of extra virgin olive oil, juice of 2 limes, and 1 tablespoon of honey. Use it on chicken, beef, or pork.
Storage: Store in an airtight container for up to 6 months.
