Agua de Jamaica (Hibiscus Tea)

This refreshing Agua de Jamaica or Hibiscus Tea is a popular Mexican drink. Made from dried hibiscus flowers this cold drink has a sweet and tart flavor and is ready in less than 20 minutes!

Ingredients

  • 8 cups water divided
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup dried hibiscus flowers
  • 2 tbsp lime juice

Instructions

  • Pour water into a medium size saucepan.
  • Add the sugar and stir to combine.
  • Heat over medium heat until water just begins to boil, stirring occasionally until the sugar completely dissolves.
  • Remove from heat and add the dried hibiscus, stir to coat in the water. Let this sit and steep for at least 15 minutes.
  • Pour hibiscus tea through a fine mesh strainer into a large pitcher, discarding the flowers.
  • Add the remaining water to the pitcher, then add in the lime juice, stir and taste. Adjust lime juice to taste.
  • Serve cold over ice. Garnish with mint and lime as desired.
